5 Petal Flower Template

This is a tutorial for a general 5 petal flower template with free printable and SVG designs.

It is probably the easiest paper flower to make. It is a great beginner flower that doesn’t require a cutting machine.

It is also quite satisfying for seasoned paper flower crafters looking for something to add to their repertoire.

In terms of paper flower making, most designs fall into a few different bucks. There’s the individual petal designs. These designs are great for having lots of control over the design of each petal and how they are assembled together. They do take a lot of time to both design, cut and assemble and I tend to stay away from these designs because it just takes the fun out of it when it takes so long.

On the other end of the spectrum is the rolled paper flower where all the petals are cut attached to one another and is typically a spiral of petals. You can do some variation on the petal designs but they tend to have a similar look. While you don’t have a lot of control over the specific position of each petal with respect to each other, they are fast to assemble. You just roll, glue, and move one to the next. These are great for shadow boxes and other projects where you need a lot of paper flowers.

Layered paper flowers are somewhere in between in terms of control and effort. There is more variety in the shape of petals and it’s not too bad to put together.

However, there is one drawback to layered paper flowers. These paper flowers are not ideal for bouquets since they are relatively flat but they really add an extra wow factor to home decor projects like shadow boxes and wreaths.

Tutorial for a general 5 Petal Layer Paper Flower

While the petals may differ for each design, the method for putting the flowers together stays the same. Here are my tips for cutting and assembling layer 5 petal paper flowers.

Step 1: How to cut 5 petal paper flower

As I mentioned earlier, you can cut these by hand. I like to do all my paper flower template cutting with my Cricut cutting machine. This design is relatively simple and doesn’t need a sticker mat so I like to use a light grip blue mat for cutting. I find the light grip mat is much easier for clean up.

Step 2: Curl the petals

I like to use a rigid edge or a credit card to do this part. As you can see, you don’t need a dedicated scraper. Here, I am just using the scraper that came with my Lodge cast iron pan.

I think a basic scrap with all the petals going in one direction looks great but you can always experiment with different curl directions.

Step 3: Glue the layers together.

I like to play around with this step. Sometimes I will invert a curled layer to add more dimension to the flower. If I do that, I will glue where the petals touch.

Otherwise, just stacking them from biggest to smallest also works great.

You can also add spacers between the layers to create more depth. Double-sided foam tape is great as a spacer that doesn’t weigh too much.

That’s it!

It’s really quite straight forward. For some of the petal shapes, I will skip a layer. In other ones, I invert the base layer. There are many ways to assemble this basic paper flower.

As I mentioned, these paper flowers are beginner-friendly. So, do not hesitate to do one if you have available and extra time to do so. Do not worry, this is not as intricate as the other designs I had made. But, surely these paper flowers are as pretty as them.

These paper flowers will be a five-petal design. I wanted to make sure that everyone has a foundation before going to a more complicated design. I thought the five-petal paper flower design is the best start. It is easy to do, and charming to look at. Also, a perfect project for you and your kids! If you do not have kids, then make sure to invite some friends and family. Maybe you can arrange a competition with who makes the best paper flower.

I tried making these five-petal paper flowers with my young children. It was a fun and great bonding activity. For once, all of you can skip electronic devices for a while. At the same time, you can share some stories while you are at it. My daughter did enjoy making her first five-petal paper flower. She was proud. But, I was happy. As someone who loves crafting and DIYs, I wanted my children to appreciate these small hobbies of mine. And who knows, probably they will be making their very own arts and crafts soon.

When making a five-petal paper flower, you are free to choose the colors you wanted. Of course, you need to consider the reason why you are doing it. Is it a gift? Is it for decor?
