I made this DIY Poppy originally as a hair tie for my daughter but it’s also a great flower for wreath making or shadow boxes.
I love the color combination of this felt poppy. The contrast between the red black and splash of yellow really draws your eye in.
It works really well for the felt material. I’ve tried making it with cardstock and it just doesn’t have the same effect.
If you’ve read any of my other tutorials, you’ll know I’m not a huge fan of getting out the needle and thread so when I don’t have to, I try my best to avoid it.
I designed this template so it is a no-sew felt poppy. It is possible to sew it together if that’s your cup of tea. I just prefer the glue gun.

Materials for DIY Felt Poppy
Felt – My flowers are a little shy of 3 inches wide and each petal is about 1.5 inches wide so you don’t need a big piece of felt to make this flower. I like this super affordable assorted 4″x4″ set of felt from Amazon.
Glue Gun – I have this super affordable one also from Amazon and I love it. I’ve tried using fabric glue on felt and it doesn’t work that well so I wouldn’t recommend it.
Pattern for making felt poppies – This template along is free and available in printable and SVG form in my resource library.
Tutorial for Making Felt Poppies
Step 1: Cut out the petals and center pieces using the poppy petal template
Step 2: Glue the base tabs of the petal together
Step 3: Glue 3 petals the hexagon base
Be sure to only glue on every other side.
Step 4: Layer on the last 3 petals.
Be sure to offset the petals from the base 3 petals.
Step 5: Roll the fringe pieces and glue in place
I first start the role with the yellow piece in the center and then wrap the blue piece around the yellow center.
Step 6: Glue the fringe center to the base petals
For hair ties, I just glue the base of the flower directly on the hair tie. I then take a scrap piece of red felt and over it gluing it in place so there is no exposed glue.

I have nothing against sewing. I believe I do not have the patience to do it. If you are master of that craft, I envy you. I tend to be critical with my sewing. With the wrong stitch, it is like I need to redo it again. This means it could be wasteful as my materials will go in the trash. And, it wastes too much of my time. This is practically the reason why I prefer glue guns in making my crafts. It is easily done. However, just make sure that when you use a glue gun that you be careful. Do not make the same mistake I made where I ended up burning the tip of my finger.
When I used a glue gun for these felt poppy flower projects, I am happy. It is a no-sew craft that any of you can do. This felt poppy flower is perfect with almost everything. You can use it as a broche or a gift decor. A lot of people who saw my felt poppy flower were hesitant to ask how it was made. They thought it was complicated. But, in reality, the process is as simple as you would expect.
I made this craft because I love poppy flowers made by felt. I believe they look better with felt. So, I highly recommend that you try this. I tested with other materials, but the Poppy Flowers does not give off the same vibe. I know, it was disappointing considering that poppy flowers are adorable.
