DIY Jewelry Tray

This is a tutorial for an easy no sew trinket tray that can be made with leather, faux leather or felt.

I have a sewing machine and I go in spurts using it. It’s just so much work to find the right thread, then set up all the needles, etc. I can’t be bothered most of the time.

I saw all these cut leather and felt tray that had either some sort of snap buttons or were sewn together and I wanted to make a version that didn’t require extra sewing or buttons to stay in place.

So here we are, the no-sew jewelry tray.

I made two designs for these cute little versatile trays in printable and SVG formats. They are both free and available in my resource library.

    Materials for DIY Jewelry Tray

Leather, Faux Leather or Felt: To make a 3inch x 4inch tray, the maximum dimension of materials is about 10 inches.

I used this faux leather that I got as part of an assorted set from Amazon. I have to warn you, while this leather is super cute, it is really soft and hard to cut with a cutting machine because it pulls easily. I had to use the rotary blade with my Cricut Maker.

If you are using a Cricut Explorer or a machine with no rotary blade option, I would recommend the Cricut Brand Faux Leather as it cuts better with the fine point blade.

If you are using felt, I would recommend a stiffer and/or thicker felt.

    Cutting Device: Scissors or blade

Cutting Machine – I use a Cricut. Check out my recommendations for Cricut machines and accessories for beginners for more info.

How to Make Your Own No Sew Tray

Step 1: Cut your material with the template

As I mentioned earlier, I used my Cricut machine to cut the tray template.

The Cricut is theoretically supposed to be able to cut faux leather easily. I tried leather side down, I tried adding a layer of transfer paper for better grip, basically nothing worked with either the fine point blade or the knife blade.

I then put it leather side down on a standard mat and used the rotary blade. This worked perfectly.

If you are using felt, I would highly recommend the rotary blade as well.

    Step 2: Optional customization

I opted to add a little monogram iron-on but this is totally up to you.

(If you are curious, this is the “Wall Decor and More” font in the Cricut Canvas. It is part of the Cricut Access Membership, check it out if you don’t have it already.)

    Step 3: Assemble

This is hardly a step since there’s no sewing or gluing or anything.

I did keep design one of the templates to have handle tabs, you can trim these if you choose a more flat look.
