Free Felt Flower Template

This is a felt flower tutorial for how to make easy felt flowers for headbands, hairbands or really any decorative piece.

My daughter is a total tomboy so I’ve been trying to get her interest more girly things because isn’t that half the fun of being a girl Mom?

She didn’t really take to these headbands but I ended up gifting them to one of my many other family friends with a girl who actually appreciated this super cute handmade gift.

Materials for DIY Felt Flower

Felt – You can use craft fleece as well which is what I ended up doing for a few of the flowers. Just be sure to use craft glue instead of the glue gun for fleece because it can melt. I love all the assorted felt packages available through Amazon.

As a point of reference, using my templates, I cut a 6-inch wide pattern on a 7″x7″ piece of material and this made a flower that is roughly 1″ to 1.5″ wide (depending on if you flare out the petals or not).

Glue – I just use tacky glue. A glue gun works as well on real wool felt.

Headbands – I love these basic elastic ones from Amazon

Template – I’ve included my free felt flower pattern template which includes both the felt flower template PDF and felt flower template SVG in my resource library.

How to Make Felt Flowers – No Sew Method

First, cut out the pieces from the template.

    How to Make Felt Flowers

Starting with the end without the base tab, start rolling the flower. I find it is easiest to grab the petals and roll from there.

Glue the rolled flower to the base.

I then take a bigger scrap felt piece and start assembling the leaves with the flowers on top. Once you’ve decided on the layout, glue the leaves first and then the flowers. If you want to make sure this part is super secure, you can also just sew everything on.

Depending on the base headband, trim the base felt strip as you see fit.

Although my daughter seemed uninterested in these DIY headbands that I made, I was really happy when the people who received them seemed ecstatics to receive them. It made my heart full and I cannot wish for more. But soon, people started asking me how to make one. Now, here I am!

DIY flowers are my favorite. They are beautiful accessories you can easily make with almost any material. For this project, I pick my one of my old-time favorite materials, felt paper. It is easy to work with, and perfect for this project. Headbands are hair accessory that is used frequently. So, using ordinary paper would not last long. That is why I decided to go with felt paper.

You can make this cutesy accessory with your daughters and nieces. They could pick the colors they want. Just make sure to look over them so they would follow the instructions properly. We do not want one of the girls failing to do hers, right? We wanted to make sure every girl is happy with their headband.

Headbands are also perfect as a token during princess-theme birthdays for your girls. They are easy to assemble, and mostly our daughters love something pretty in their head. They may not have the tiara, at least they have a headband.

I remember the first time I made a DIY felt paper flower headband. I think it was really adorable and would perfectly fit any tutu dress. Unfortunately, my daughter declined to use it. However, let us hope one of these days she would wear one.

To secure the flowers to the headband, I assume the bigger scrap piece wraps around the band and is glued or do you just glue it straight flat?
