Paper Orchid Flower

This is such a simple flower to make, I almost didn’t write a tutorial for it.

But here we are so don’t laugh at how straight forward this one is.

Orchids are notoriously temperamental in real life. I have failed basically every time I’ve been given one as a gift to maintain. I know better than to buy them myself.

This paper orchid, on the other hand, is not only super easy to make but it lasts forever with no maintenance! It doesn’t get any better than this.

Materials for Paper Orchid

Cardstock – It annoys me to say this but while the textured papers are much harder to cut with a cutting machine, they do tend to come in more vivid colors. You can probably get away with a more textured paper but I would still recommend a color core medium weight cardstock. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Assorted Starter Pack – Basic assorted colors, great starter pack, perfect weight for most papercraft projects
  • Cricut Joy Insert Card Packs – You don’t have to use these with the Cricut Joy, they are nice material kids for cardmaking.
  • Cardstock Warehouse Brand on Amazon – I love the quality of all the matte-colored cardstock with Cardstock Warehouse. It is my go-to brand for individual matte colors that I might need
  • Poptone Assorted Variety Pack – This is the perfect peppy assortment of colors of heavy cardstock. It’s a heavy cardstock assortment with colors I actually use frequently for cardmaking.
  • Seasonal Assorted Variety Pack – This is a slight variation on the Poptone assortment and has a quite few neutrals that complement almost any accent color.
  • Stardream Metallics Line – For paper crafts, the Stardream line is the go-to for a metallic shimmer finish. It is the perfect sheen to make any project pop. The core is also colored is which hard to find for metallic paper.

Glue – Any type of glue works for this one

Cutting Machine – I use a Cricut. Check out my recommendations for Cricut machines and accessories for beginners for more info.

Templates – I’ve included this paper Orchid in both SVG and printable format for free in my resource library.

How to assemble the Paper Orchid

Step 1: Cut out the templates.

I used a light grip blue mat for this template. My only advice here is if you are trying to use a little scrap of paper to cut the stamen pieces, I would go up to a standard grip mat.

The reason is the small pieces need more surface area to grip or a stronger grip so I find scraps tend to slide around on the lighter grip mat.

    Step 2: Curl the petals

I use my handy scraper device but you can also use scissors or a credit card.

Step 3: Glue the layers on top of each other

The base is the 3 petal layer, then the 2 petal layer, then the stamen. You can’t mess it up, I promise.
