If you are looking for an “Our first home” personalized gift or just something to make for your own home, this is an easy home map sign you can make with everyday affordable materials.
I’m a little tired of gifting only the registry items for weddings these days so I wanted to make something easy and affordable as an additional gift for the couple’s first home.
My printer ran out of ink for the time being so I couldn’t print the map portion so for the photos, I had to substitute a map I had around the house.

There are many different sentiments you can add to this sign. I just included a phrase that I thought was filling for the design.
I’ve seen really cute nautical-themed latitude longitude signs. I’ve seen “The x Family Established y” phrases. Even something like “Home Sweet Home” works.

Frame – Any frame works for this project. Here’s the basic black one I used in the photo from Amazon.
White Cardstock – I like framing the map using white, I think it creates a clean aesthetic but technically you can use any color. Here’s a super affordable pack of white cardstock from Amazon that will sure come in handy for other projects as well.
Printer – You will need a printer for the map and the frame. Since mine ran out of ink, I just used black vinyl with some transfer tape for the letters. You can always just use a printed map if you happen to have one.
Cutting Machine – I use a Cricut. Check out my recommendations for Cricut machines and accessories for beginners for more info.
Template – I’ve included all of my Our First Home Printable frame templates for free in my resource library.
Tutorial for Making a Personalized DIY Map Decor
Step 1: Print or cut your map
I like using google maps. I just type in the address and then zoom out to an appropriate screen. The print function is the hamburger menu in the upper left corner of the screen.
Step 2: Cut you map to size of the frame
It doesn’t have to cover everything, it just needs to cover the cutout of the house.
Step 3: Prepare your frame.
If you are printing then cutting, then this is a relatively simple step. Otherwise, cut your vinyl and weed as needed.
I did not include the frame with the house templates because I figured people might have different frame sizes. You will need to draw you own frame border with the “Square” tool and then “attach” it to the house graphic in Cricut Design Space.
You can also just cut this with a knife if you don’t have a cutting machine.
Step 4: Position your map in place
When sandwiched between the backing and the frame, the map should stay in place. If you want it extra secure, you can always tape it to the back of the frame.
That’s it! Sign making doesn’t get any easier than this.
